We were able to really increase the income for my medical practice by utilizing the EHR meaningful use stimulus provided by the government. Back several months ago, we had been thinking about updating our current records system to an electronic one, but then we got caught up in our busier season and ended up getting a massive wave of new patients and the records system got pushed to the back burner.
When we had a new addition to our practice, Dr. Miller, we finally were motivated enough to make the switch. The doctor had previously been working in a large hospital in Denver and had quite a bit of experience with the latest technology in his work. He was a nice guy and while I was getting to know him in the lounge, we ended up talking about patient records. He told me that using the electronic system had made great advancements in their effectiveness and made a huge difference in how their practice ran.
He also told me about the EHR meaningful use benefits the government offered and how it really could increase our revenue over time. I spoke to the supervisors and told them about this new information, and although we knew that it was going to be some extra effort to change over to the new system, but we felt that it would be well worth it. I was heavily involved in transferring everything to an electronic system and spent more than a few extra hours making sure that everything was up to speed. It worked, though and before long, we were in possession of a completely electronic system.
Once we began using the new system everyone was so happy with it, and the administration even thanked me for convincing them to make the switch. I especially liked the feature of being able to access patient records on my iPad, which made it so much more convenient for myself and for everyone else in the office. The new system was working out so well, that we decided to go one step further and sign up for revenue cycle management with the same place that we were using for our electronic record management system.
This time as well, we found that our income increased almost instantly and we were able to upgrade our equipment and make other improvements to our clinic. We were then able to truly use our time better, taking care of our patients, and it made a big difference. Soon we were getting more and more new patients as people told their friends and family about how pleased they were with the service they got here. These changes we had made were helping our business so much that we couldn't imagine why we had waited so long to make them!
