Field Laptop Features

By Allyson Westcot

A regular laptop and a rugged laptop have more in common than they have differences. But the differences are crucial for those that need a rugged computer that can stand up to the elements and various tough conditions. Some of the most common features found in rugged laptops are features you need to appraise rigorously when you're ready to buy to be absolutely certain you get one that's protected enough for your requirements.

The Case and Cushion in a Rugged Laptop

All rugged laptops don't have special cases, but the most heavy-cuty often do. A magnesium surrounding can be up to 20 times tougher than the kind of case found on most standard laptops, which is generally made of ABS plastic. Cushioning within the laptop computer like foam rubber and other padding is designed to protect the components from shock in the case of drops.

The disk drive is intended to be more shock resistant than one in a standard notebook PC. Gels, springs and rubber are materials regularly used. Specialty hardened glass is also regularly used as the screen surface, which may not sound especially break-resistant but is, and is far less likely tobe scratched or damaged than an LCD screen with a soft surface.

Ease of Use, Sealed Components and Safety

The hard screens are also usually designed to be seen well outside. If you've ever attempted to utilise a laptop with the sun glinting on it, you know how exasperating that may be. It's assumed that a rugged laptop is going to be employed in out of doors conditions, including full sun, so the screens are anti-glare and easily readable in the brightest conditions.

Rugged laptops have differing levels of sealing against elements like water and dirt, but even semi-rugged models usually have basic protections in place like sealed screens and keys so that spills or maybe light rain can't get inside. The most durable models are fully sealed with no way for these hazards to get inside any part of the machine.
