Expanding The Story Of Battlestar Galactica Characters

By Willard Y. Wuckert

Battlestar Galactica is a popular and well-known science fiction franchise that, despite having been around for decades, continues to attract new fans. The BGS universe was first introduced to television audiences in 1978 through the series of the same name; this led to the writing of novels, the preparation of comic books, and even the release of video games all built around the same basic storyline. The story that was first presented in that series has been re-imagined, adapted, and extended in many ways over the years in order to appease fans who are always hungry for more. Even though the roles and details of certain characters have changed throughout the variations of the main storyline, the essence of each character has been maintained and fans have received each of the new stories quite well.

Glen Larson was the mind making both the original series that ran for one season in 1978 as well as the brief sequel released in 1980 which contained a few of the original characters. The story follows a small group of humans who are trying to avoid destruction by the powerful and unyielding Cylon race. In spite of the fact that the original series was only one season in length, that brief season was enough to draw in devoted fans who were so upset at the cancellation that they protested at the TV studio's headquarters.

The next BGS series was produced from 2004 to 2009 after the successful airing of a three hour miniseries which was released to much praise in 2003. The characters were mostly the same as their 1978 originals with some clear updates made in order to refresh the series and offer it a modern appeal. The fact that this later series was so much longer than the original indicated that the producers could spend more time creating deep, intricate characters.

Once the Battlestar Galactica series ended in 2009, work began on spin off projects that would continue to expand on the characters and themes made popular in the TV show. An example is Caprica, a prequel series which ran for one season in 2010 and offered additional information about what happened before the first episode of BGS.

There are many hardcore Battlestar Galactica fans who love to get their hands on all creative material that adds life to this unique sci-fi universe. Video game fans who also appreciate the series can enjoy online games that allow you to interact with the popular characters while enjoying a well-designed MMO game.
