Corporation Sold Out Their Values - Computer Antivirus Software Critique

By Nicholas Hill

Whatever you do, do not install McAfee, at least not this year's version. I usually find the best price here (about half of what Norton/Symantec charges for a renewal!), plus it's nice to have a physical disc to use when installing NIS to 3 PCs.

So right now my computer is just a sad black box. I believe this is not a serious software flaw - Norton nor any other software has no business hijacking your computer and taking control away from your ability to stop installation of any program whatsoever. Both computers now have a shorter boot-up time and I really like the features of this security software over Trend Micro and Zone Alarm that I had before. I had a $15 off coupon from Norton to purchase this on their site, but when I checked price it was going to be more for 1 user with my coupon than the Amazon price of $24.99 for 3 PCs. I'm a SW professional and mentioned this to a peer who immediately recognized the pattern and said Yea, Norton becomes a virus.' My impression is that Norton has gone to the dark side. I can't imagine ever going with them again. This product has all of the features of Norton AntiVirus, plus more. It's definitely worth the little bit of extra money for the upgrade in capabilities.

I would highly recommend it to anyone who is concerned about keeping their computer safe and secure. Since I've had the Norton Products installed on my PC peace of mind is the name of the game, since I know my system is protected at all times. So, I felt it necessary to deduct a star for not only the hassle, but also the wastefulness of having to have a boxed copy of the software mailed to me, just so that I could type in the code provided within the box. The product arrived in about a week in perfect condition.

Instead, Symantec prefers to try to gouge its customers. For this software which is currently selling for $37.99 on Amazon, Symantec charges $59.99 for renewal. The problems as I see them are probably pretty minor for most people. The things that I don't like are the speed (it is slower on my machine then the previous edition, meaning it is so bloated it bogs things down), and unlike previous editions, this one says it is incompatible with Webroot Spy Sweeper. Since 2010 Norton became my favorite security suite for my PC, and this one is no exception. I tested it on 3 different PC running XP Pro, Vista H.P.32bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

I will always buy Norton for my computer. Since we needed to renew our Norton Internet Security for another year, we found it to be much less expensive to purchase and install this product than to renew with Norton online. I prefer purchasing directly from Amazon whenever possible. Their prices are always competitive and their customer service is top notch - bar none. I've had a few issues. First, trying to get 2009 to run with Windows 7 was causing some issues.

I'm very satisfied with this virus protection program. In addition to being a virus protection program, it has many security options.

Vista Home Premium 64 4GB ram I am writing this review on an old mac book because installing Norton Internet Security killed my Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. When you try to start Windows in safe mode that is when you get nothing but a blank screen.
