This option will aid you to make it darker or lighter or as to how you want the photo to be without eliminating the specified highlights.

You can adjust the photo as well using the saturation control. Make use of any controls only when you need it, do not use it when you think it is not necessary. The saturation control helps you improve the vividness of the applied color. Do not over use this option however as it may result to being out of context or focus.
